Continuing to be the Adventure Time episode that keeps on giving, “Thank You” is one of just 65 short films that’ll be screened at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in Utah next month, the Sundance Institute is announcing. There were a record 8,012 short film submissions this year so, yeah, Pen Ward and Tom Herpich deserve a mighty thumbs up. Congratulations, men. Now go buy some parkas.

Not only did Tom write and board the episode, he designed the title card, above, too. Martin Ansolabehere and Nick Jennings painted it.

Your votes will help our panel of judges make the final call on which entries are the most gut-bustingly hilarious, the most eye-wettingly dramatic, the most pants-crappingly action-packed, and the most heart-tuggingly romantic. We don’t want to oversell things here, but this is quite literally the most important thing you will ever cast a vote for. All that Presidential election hooha? Consider that nonsense practice for your voting finger, like the training montage in Rocky IV, except instead of your finger lifting a telephone pole up a mountain on its back, it’ll be clicking a mouse button.

How to Vote

Every video entered in the 2012 Saxxy Awards can be viewed and voted on at theSaxxy Awards voting page. Head over now to vote! We’ve randomized all the entries to keep things fair; however, you can filter by category if you’re more interested in some genres than others. After you’ve watched an entry, simply upvote it or downvote it and move onto the next one. Vote as much as you like, but remember: you’ve only got one vote per entry.

Also, with such a huge number of entries, it’s a challenge to keep on top of entries breaking the contest rules. So if you spot an entry that’s longer than five minutes, or that’s using copyrighted (i.e. not Valve, and not public domain) material, help us out and report it.

Valve’s Source engine has been running most of the company’s games for around a decade now, but despite some wizardry being performed on games like Left 4 Dead 2 and Portal 2, it’s starting to show its age. Which is probably why the company is starting to ramp up the number of times it mentions its Source successor in public.

Back in August, some notes were found in code referencing “Source 2”, then last week, during a fan visit to Valve’s HQ, boss Gabe Newell said that the company was working on a brand new engine, not simply an upgrade to the existing Source Engine (which has been updated several times since Half-Life 2’s release as it is).

I won’t even bother asking what your thoughts would be on what game could possibly debut a new Valve engine.

As I logged in for the first time tonight, this was the first thing that came up on my Tumblr dashboard. The happiness accumulated during my second day of school dissipated for a while, to be replaced with a deep melancholy – perhaps the titular “bad medicine”? (As the filmmaker said, “read into it what you want.”)

In line with what I have said, this is perhaps the most beautiful Source Filmmaker production I have ever seen.

To all of you who like Source Filmmaker, Team Fortress 2, or basically animation, filmmaking, and gaming, you should see this. This proves that upon us now is a very good place and a very good time for developing ideas, telling stories, showcasing visuals… now that the creative process is being made available to more and more people, and the results are not as bad as predicted – never as bad.

To the person who said that every story has already been written, I would recommend you to watch Looper.

Never since Robert Heinlein’s short story “—All You Zombies—”, not to mentionLa jetée and its spiritual successor Twelve Monkeys, has the concept of time travel been so sorely pushed to its logical (and illogical) limits. The nature of time travelling as befits the story universe was well established and will keep you second-guessing, a very good narrative technique which erases most if not all predictability of what could possibly happen – a very good way of keeping your audience tense and attentive, and also a very rewarding experience to those who can actually second-guess it (insert inside joke here, hehe). A very simple throwaway piece of information about the film’s alternate timeline also serves as the brilliant… never mind, watch the film first haha!

The only thing that people seem to have a gripe with this vision of the future is that it is not “futuristic” enough. For them, I ask a simple question: wasn’t Astroboy set in the year 2000? The film acknowledges the real enough, but still often overlooked fact that the future will never be what we imagine it to be, and that while technological advances are beautifully (and horribly) exponential in their rise, one will never expect glass-domed cities and metal towers to be built tomorrow. One will, however, expect the new iPhone… (what number are we in now?) to follow soon enough, and as the trend continues, looking back we should be able to see a radical change from when the first iPhone was introduced. Thus you have a future that is realistic in itself, and also serves as bringing the audience closer to home, or at least closer to their own timeline. This is also the film’s greatest advantage – once a story exceeds its genre’s conventions AND SUCCEEDS, why, there you already have the building blocks of a masterpiece.

One final note: I feel something bad deep inside whenever I see Looper being compared with Inception, because it doesn’t do justice to both films – comparing Looper to Nolan’s film doesn’t do justice to Inception, and more importantly, comparing Inception to Johnson’s film DOESN’T DO JUSTICE TO LOOPER – in short, it’s that good. 5/5.
